Dog Christmas Outfits: How to Choose the Right Size, Fabric and Fit

A Christmas outfit can make holiday photos and walks a lot more fun, but only if your dog is comfortable in it. The most common problem with dog clothes is not style. It is fit. An outfit that is too tight or too loose can restrict movement or slip around, and most dogs will not enjoy wearing it.

This guide covers how to measure your dog, what to look for in fabric, and how to check the fit once the outfit is on.

How to measure your dog

Use a soft tape measure, the kind used for sewing. If you do not have one, use a piece of string and then hold it against a ruler. Have your dog stand up, and take these three measurements:

  • Chest: the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the most important measurement.
  • Neck: around the base of the neck, where a collar usually sits.
  • Back length: from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail.

Leave a finger or two of room under the tape so you are not measuring too tight. Then compare your numbers with the size chart on the product page. Charts vary between items, so check each one. If your dog is between sizes, sizing up is usually the more comfortable choice, as many of our listings advise.

Quick picks

Choosing the right fabric

Soft and stretchy for everyday comfort

Knit sweaters and stretchy fabrics are easier to get on and off, and they move with your dog. They are a good choice for dogs that are new to wearing clothes.

Fleece and plush for chilly walks

Fleece and plush fabrics add warmth. They can get too warm indoors, so take the outfit off once you are home, especially in a heated house.

Flannel and cotton for light layers

Cotton and flannel feel lighter. They suit mild days and photo sessions. Whatever the fabric, check the care label or listing. For example, our Santa coat is recommended hand wash so the decorations stay in good shape.

How to check the fit

  • Your dog should be able to walk, sit and lie down normally.
  • You should be able to slide two fingers under the outfit at the chest and neck.
  • The outfit should not pull tight under the legs or rub at the armpits.
  • Nothing should cover your dog's eyes, nose or mouth, and nothing should get in the way of going to the bathroom.
  • Antlers, bows and other decorations should sit securely and not dangle where your dog can chew them off.

Build up slowly

Let your dog sniff the outfit first. Put it on for a minute with a treat, then take it off. Add a little more time each day. If your dog seems uncomfortable, stop and try again later or choose a different style.

Always supervise

Do not leave a dog alone in clothing, and remove the outfit if your dog starts chewing at it or looks stressed. Outfits are for short, supervised wear, like a walk, a family photo or an hour by the tree.

Frequently asked questions

What if my dog is between sizes?

Compare your chest measurement with the chart for that specific outfit. If you land between two sizes, most guides suggest the larger one. You can also email us at furrow.friend@gmail.com before ordering and we will help you check.

Can I put a dog outfit on my cat?

Some of our listings are for both small dogs and cats, and the size chart is written for both. Cats are often less happy in clothes, so introduce it slowly and stop if your cat is unhappy.

How should I wash a dog Christmas outfit?

Follow the care instructions on the product page. For decorated pieces, gentle hand washing is usually the safest option.
